The scene took place last weekend, at the home of the suspect, in the town of Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq.
The victim, a young man of 27, had entered his yard in the middle of the night.
"He then set fire to a garden furniture", writes the newspaper.
Awakened by the commotion, the occupants of the premises asked him to leave before the husband, a former hunter, went to get his rifle and fired twice.
Seriously injured, the young man was taken to hospital where he died.
