Some mountain hikers make five mistakes that make them vulnerable to disappearance, as a result of the rescuers' inability to locate them when they suffer physical injuries.

The most prominent of these mistakes, which are more frequent during the summer, are not drinking enough water, not taking into account the hottest times of the day, in addition to having no escorts for them, and not carrying maps to guide them when phone batteries run out.

Governmental and medical agencies in the Eastern Province are intensifying awareness campaigns to warn enthusiasts of walking on roads and off-road areas, and mountain climbers, of the dangers of going out alone to practice this sport in light of the high temperatures, due to the increased risk of fatigue and loss of consciousness.

In detail, the Director of the Eastern Region Police Department, Colonel Ali Al-Hamoudi, said that his department is coordinating with the concerned authorities to set up directional boards in places prohibited to be used for climbing.

He pointed out that the number of reports of missing persons in mountainous areas and valleys has decreased since the beginning of this year, as a result of raising awareness of mountaineers, and setting up directional boards in places where climbing is prohibited. for the sport of climbing.

An amateur climber, Muhammad Al-Ketbi, confirmed that he has been practicing this sport for a long time, but he deliberately reduces it during the summer, due to the high temperatures and increased humidity.

He explained that there are procedures that mountaineering practitioners must adhere to to ensure their safety, “because phone coverage is usually weak in these areas.

Whether the trip is on foot or in a vehicle, it is necessary to carry a printed copy of the map showing the mountain paths and the nature of the roads in them, because the map helps determine the location and main directions in the event that the GPS device battery or smartphone runs out.

Dr. Mariam Al Hammadi confirmed that exercising during the summer may cause several risks.

"When the weather is humid and hot, the evaporation process becomes difficult," she said.

The hot air also does not help cool the dilated blood vessels, which increases the risk of dehydration, heat stroke and heat exhaustion.”

She explained that "in the event of a person suffering from heat stroke, the people accompanying him should hurry to call an ambulance for him, and take the necessary health measures to prevent a worsening of his health."

In addition, the Director of the Civil Defense Department in Fujairah, Brigadier Ali Obaid Al Tunaiji, confirmed that the accidents that occur in mountainous areas during the summer period are caused by wrong behavior, which is repeated by some of its visitors.

He explained that “these behaviors consist of not getting more water and food, not carrying navigation devices, not checking the vehicle before leaving, not making sure that there is enough fuel, or not taking spare fuel.

Also, some people go out without informing their relatives of where they are going, or how long they will spend there.”

He stressed the need to carry a backpack with enough water and dry food for at least two days, in anticipation of any emergency, and to carry flashlights and spare batteries, in addition to carrying a portable charger for phones.

Tips for exercisers in hot weather

Dr. Mariam Al Hammadi gave advice to exercisers in hot weather, which included:

• Drink sufficient amounts of water.

• Do not exercise during the hottest times of the day.

• Wear light-coloured clothing.

• Stop exercising as soon as signs and symptoms of dehydration and heat exhaustion appear and move to a shaded place to take a break.

Al Hammadi stated that “in the event of a person suffering from heat stroke, the people accompanying him should call an ambulance, and try to cool him by available methods, such as moving him to a shaded and cool place, covering him with wet blankets, and giving him water to drink if he is conscious.”
