Taking advantage of the manifest rejection that the separatist mass demonstrated in the

against ERC and against their will to negotiate with the Government the celebration of a new independence referendum, JxCat tried to blow up the negotiating table on Tuesday, but obtained an unexpected result. In an unprecedented coup of authority, Pere Aragonès expelled the formation led by Carles Puigdemont from the conclave after trying to impose the presence of members outside the

in the Catalan delegation. ERC will tackle the bilateral negotiation with the Government alone, dismounting the formation of the fugitive from the forum that will mark the Catalan legislature and reinforcing its alliance with Pedro Sánchez to explore a response to the “Catalan conflict”.

The president of the Generalitat did not accept that three of the four representatives appointed by the neo-convergents did not comply with the only requirement that had been transferred to them: to be part of his Cabinet. Aware that it was raising a public challenge to the ERC leader, JxCat chose -without prior consensus with the Republicans- Jordi Sànchez, Jordi Turull, Míriam Nogueras and Jordi Puigneró as its envoys for bilateral negotiations and released their names to the press. He did it minutes before the meeting of the Government was to begin in which the Catalan delegation had to agree and knowing that the two convicted and their spokesperson in Congress could be vetoed by their partners of the Government, as it ended up happening.

The ordeal led to a government crisis whose consequences have yet to emerge. After the public disagreements between the pro-independence partners that have already ruined the expansion of the El Prat airport, this new and more serious episode undermines the minimum confidence with which ERC and JxCat began a legislature with a tendency to end as abruptly as the previous one: if the Government does not implode before, Aragonès will have to submit to a question of trust in 2023 -as agreed with the CUP- and his own government colleagues could remove it of the position.

«Who represents Catalonia is its Government. I do not intend to allow this historic opportunity to be lost, because a State Government admits for the first time the existence of a political conflict and sits down to negotiate, "defended Aragonès in an extraordinary appearance pronounced at the end of a convulsive session of the Executive Council, which It began with more than half an hour late after the president of the Generalitat suddenly learned of the challenge from his colleagues in the Government, and that he had to be interrupted at the request of JxCat after verifying that the Republican leader did not swallow with his impositions. Finally, the Government approved that the Catalan delegation should only be made up of members of the Cabinet with the ERC card. The agreement opened the door for JxCat to add councilors of the Government to the delegation, but those of Puigdemont refused to rectify.

Jordi Sànchez assured that his party was "vetoed by La Moncloa" and his assessment was quite correct.

In the Government yesterday the decision of Aragonès did not cause surprise.

It was what was spoken, what was agreed.

At La Moncloa, they have always distrusted Junts, aware of Puigdemont's purpose of boycotting the dialogue.

Hence, they tied up with ERC that the forum would only be for members of both governments.

They forgot the calculated ambiguity of the past about the possible presence of figures like Oriol Junqueras, aware that JxCat would play all its tricks to destabilize.

Sánchez only validates the dialogue with Aragonès and ERC and both governance partners compromised their word in the face of possible movements by Puigdemont. Both Socialists and Republicans are the most committed to making this dialogue start, endure and present political benefits. "We support the proposal that the president of the Generalitat has launched," said Isabel Rodríguez, spokesperson for the Executive, who will be at the table yesterday. "No other framework has ever been understood other than teams from the two governments."

From La Moncloa they make it clear that the dialogue is with the presidency of the Generalitat, not with the parties.

They reinforce the role of Aragonès, who has already been given oxygen with the presence of Sánchez.

Socialists and Republicans need this forum to get going and to last over time to shield both their political positions from the opposition and their governance: as long as there is dialogue and there are no closed agreements, they will be able to convey that their roadmap is still in force.

Is it possible that ERC will back down to contain the crisis with JxCat?

Republican sources say no.

«If you want you can add members of the Government.

If they don't, it's up to them.
