• Venezuela The Constitutional Court of Cape Verde authorizes the extradition of the alleged figurehead of Maduro

Nicolás Maduro's

regime

has announced that it will include Colombian businessman

Alex Saab,

accused of being the front man of the socialist leader, as another of his representatives at the negotiating table with the opposition in

Mexico,

a pressure measure that seems unlikely, since Saab is being held in

Cape Verde

and could soon be deported to the

United States

to face money laundering charges.

"The delegation of the government of the

Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

before the dialogue and negotiation table that takes place with sectors of the Venezuelan opposition in the capital of the

United Mexican States

wants to inform the decision to incorporate the Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab as a full member of this delegation, "said

Jorge Rodríguez,

head of Maduro's representatives in the negotiation

, at a press conference

.

Rodríguez also said that Saab will be part of the social table that it was agreed to create in the dialogue in

Mexico City

to manage vaccines against the coronavirus, medical supplies and humanitarian aid, including food for

Venezuela.

"Alex Saab has been

kidnapped

in a prison abroad for

more than 400 days

(...) Violating human rights, the rights to due process," added the president of the

Chavista

National Assembly

.

The incorporation of Saab to the negotiation in Mexico seems unlikely, since he has been detained in

Cape Verde

since June 2020 and last week the Constitutional Court of that country ruled that he can be extradited to the United States.

The businessman is accused by a Florida federal court of money laundering and bribery of Venezuelan officials.

His attorneys have denied the charges.

In a 194-page decision ending months of court fights, the three court judges collapse all arguments in Saab's defense, including that his arrest was illegal because

Interpol's

red alert

for his arrest was issued after having been apprehended by the authorities of the island nation.

The Colombian's lawyers have repeatedly said that his arrest is politically motivated, due to pressure from the United States government, because he is a "diplomat" from the Maduro regime.

Already on August 13, the

Constitutional Court of Cape Verde

had decided the extradition of the businessman, however, the defense presented a final appeal.
