France will help the Afghans financially.
Paris will contribute 100 million euros to the emergency plan drawn up by the United Nations to deal with the humanitarian emergency in Afghanistan, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced Monday in Geneva.
As the Taliban have regained power in the country, the situation is becoming critical for millions of Afghans, already affected by an acute drought and the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the UN, in the absence of support, almost the entire Afghan population (97%) is at risk of falling below the poverty line next year, compared to 72% today.
“Almost half of the population is now in danger.
Including more than 4 million women and nearly 10 million children.
Our responsibility is to be at their side in this new ordeal, ”declared the French foreign minister at a high-level ministerial meeting in Geneva.
The United States, for its part, has pledged $ 64 million for the emergency appeal launched by the United Nations, which covers $ 600 million in aid for humanitarian organizations in the country.
