September 13, 2021A plane of the Pakistani company Pia landed at Kabul airport: it is the first international commercial flight to land at the airport of the Afghan capital since the Taliban took control of the country on August 15.

It is also one of the first signs of economic normalization for the country and for its main international airport, besieged in late August by thousands of Afghans who wanted to flee after the return to power of the Taliban.

"This morning I landed in Kabul. During my visit I will assess the country's humanitarian needs and the plight of 3.5 million displaced Afghans. I am grateful to all the United Nations, NGOs and other humanitarian workers who are working hard on the field to meet these needs ". The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, tweets it. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will chair an international conference in Geneva today, in an attempt to raise more than $ 600 million for the Afghan population.

Even before the Taliban returned to power, half of the Afghan population (around 18 million people) depended on aid. A figure looks set to rise due to drought and a shortage of money and food, UN officials and humanitarian organizations warn.
