A 60-year-old breeder was sentenced Friday by the Guingamp correctional court (Côtes-d'Armor) for animal abuse, acts of cruelty, mistreatment and detention of corpses.

Last February, 80 cattle were seized on his farm to be taken care of in relay farms or euthanized.

On the spot, the veterinary services and members of the Oaba association (Work of assistance to the animals of slaughter) had discovered corpses of animals and dying animals, parked in unworthy conditions.

At the end of the trial, five horses belonging to the defendant were also confiscated.

Formal notices in the past

The associations for the defense of animals, the Brigitte Bardot and Oaba foundation had become civil parties.

The sixty-year-old had already been the subject of formal notices for lack of care in the past.

At the hearing, according to our colleagues, he explained that he had been overwhelmed by the difficulties in managing his operation.

In addition to the suspended prison sentence and reimbursement of lawyers' fees, the man was ordered to pay damages to associations.

He will also have to pay 11,027 euros for the costs of keeping his confiscated animals.

Finally, he is now prohibited from keeping an animal.
