“These days we remember the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to the families and friends of all those whose lives were cut short as a result of the inhuman acts of terrorists committed two decades ago, ”the ambassador said.

He noted that "about three thousand people died as a result of the barbaric hijacking of four passenger planes and the subsequent attacks on the" twin towers "of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon."

“Among them were citizens of the United States and dozens of other countries, including our compatriots - Russians and immigrants from the former USSR. Immediately after the tragedy, Russia expressed complete solidarity with the Americans. Our country has also experienced terrible human grief from massive terrorist attacks that have killed hundreds of innocent people. Russian President Vladimir Putin became the first head of state to call his American counterpart, George W. Bush, in connection with the terrorist attacks. During his visit to the United States in November 2001, the Russian leader left the following inscription on the wall of the memory, located on the site of the destroyed Twin Towers of the World Trade Center: “I bow my head to the victims of terror. I am delighted with the courage of the New Yorkers, ”Antonov said.

The diplomat said that "the tragedy of September 11, 2001 showed that terrorism is a global threat."

“Attempts to create isolated 'islands of security' in today's interdependent world are ephemeral and doomed to failure. Victory over terrorists can only be won by joining the efforts of the entire international community. There is no place for carelessness and double standards in this matter. The division of terrorists into "good" and "bad" is inadmissible. As Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have repeatedly noted, cooperation in the field of counterterrorism meets the interests of both Moscow and Washington. Interaction in this area can save hundreds of lives. The sculptural composition "Tear of Sorrow" is another evidence of the unity of our peoples in the face of the global threat of terrorism. This memorial symbolizes the grief that Russians share with Americans, ”he added.

On September 11, 2001, terrorists from the Al-Qaeda * group carried out a series of major terrorist attacks in the United States.
