CAIRO -

Statements made by Egyptian journalist Ibrahim Issa, during a discussion session held yesterday, Saturday, as part of the launching of the National Strategy for Human Rights, in the presence of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, sparked a wide state of controversy in the Egyptian street.

Issa demanded the abolition of the ID card field and the suspension of teaching religious texts in school curricula - with the exception of religion - and questioned why Christian and even Jewish texts were not added to the curricula.

The writer also called on the authority to issue a decision to limit the number of children who receive support from the state when only two children, and to lift the support for the rest of the children.

Yesterday, Sisi launched the "National Human Rights Strategy", which aims to develop the state's policies and directions in dealing with relevant files to enhance respect for all civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights, according to a statement by the presidency.

Deleting the religion field

Issa - who has been famous for years for his controversial theses regarding religion and Islamic heritage - criticized what he called attempts to condemn the state, and Dar Al-Iftaa issued fatwas on various worldly matters, calling on the state to promote freedom of belief in Egypt, by not punishing the person who breaks the fast in Ramadan, And not to include religious subjects in the school curricula with the exception of religion, denouncing the placement of Islamic texts in the absence of Christian and Jewish texts from the curricula.

He also demanded the removal of the religion field from the Egyptian identity cards, indicating that it is a modern matter, as it was imposed in 1956, denouncing the retention of the religion field while talking about a national strategy for human rights. According to him.

Issa's claims about freedom of belief and the card slot sparked widespread controversy on social networking sites in Egypt, and a large number of social media pioneers expressed their anger for allowing this writer to talk about Islam in this way, even though the state speaks on other occasions about the need to specialize in the matter before talking about it.

On the other hand, some commentators expressed their support for the idea of removing the religion field from the card.

Agree with the president's calls

Issa's call comes in line with the president's repeated calls about freedom of belief, the latest of which was his speech yesterday during the same session, in which he called for freedom of belief, stressing that he accepts those who do not believe in religion on the condition that they "respect the path of others and do not impose their choices on them."

A few weeks ago, Sisi called on Egyptians to rethink their beliefs, saying, "We are all born Muslim and non-Muslim by card and inheritance, but does anyone know that we must reformulate our understanding of the belief we follow?"

He continued, "We were young and did not know medicine. When we grew up, did you think or be afraid to think about the belief that you are following, right or wrong? Did you think of going in the process of searching for the path until reaching the truth?"

Lifting support for the third child

Issa asked the president, during the panel discussion, the possibility of issuing a decision or law limiting the number of children in a family sponsored by the state to only two, and stopping child support after the third child, as a means to combat population growth.

But Sisi rejected Issa’s proposal, explaining that this matter cannot be resolved by law, and that if the law was able to solve it, the law would have been issued years ago, pointing to the state’s responsibility for the child if his family did not educate him, or he faced difficulties in his life.

In turn, the educational expert, Kamal Moghith, launched a severe attack on Issa's proposal, through his account on Facebook, denouncing the writer - who presented himself as a defender of justice, freedom and rights - demanding the state to lift its hand from its children.

In his publication, Moghith said that the issue of procreation is very complex, in which religious, social, economic and cultural factors are linked in a way that cannot be dealt with simply and superficially, or simply by issuing a law written by a tailor, and the House of Representatives stamps it in a session of tens of thousands of laws.

supporters attack

Issa's statements about the state lifting its support for the third child, drew widespread condemnation on the communication sites in Egypt, both from supporters of the authority and opponents alike.

A number of regime supporters expressed their anger at the presence of Issa at the conference, and his statements that may cause the street to stir up the state, pointing to his previous contradictory positions on the rule of the late President Hosni Mubarak and the January revolution.

The president and the intellectual, the text is a text.

I followed Ibrahim Issa's questions and President Sisi's responses to them, and I was shocked by the shallowness and disappointment of one of those whom I deceived as an intellectual.

The president was more educated, understanding and more in-depth.
