During the past two days, Sudanese activists denounced on social media the interview of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Intisar Saghiroun, one of the symbols of the regime of ousted President Omar al-Bashir, during her visit to a university owned by him.

On Wednesday, Minister Saghiroun visited the University of Medical Sciences and Technology owned by the leader of the annihilated rescue regime, Mamoun Hemida, who served as Minister of Health in Khartoum State during the era of Al-Bashir, and faces widespread accusations of working to pursue a policy of systematic destruction of the sector.

During the visit, the Minister met Hamida, who was close to the isolated Omar al-Bashir, and expressed her admiration for the students' non-academic talents and creativity, during their celebration of the university's silver jubilee.

The closure of the central hospitals in the Sudanese capital and their replacement with peripheral hospitals is the most prominent decision taken by Mamoun Hamida during his tenure as Minister of Health in Khartoum State.

Following the overthrow of ousted Omar al-Bashir, Hamida was arrested on corruption charges before he was later released on bail.

After the uproar caused by the image of Saghiroon with Mamoun Hamida, and the overwhelming popular anger, the Ministry of Higher Education rushed in a Saturday statement to apologize to the Sudanese people for the frustration caused by the picture, but it indicated that the pictures that the Minister collects with Hamida, were carefully selected, and focus on them only. Pictures taken on the same occasion.

While the ministry statement acknowledged that Hamida is one of the symbols of the former regime, he explained that Minister Saghiroun had received an invitation, as happens from all universities affiliated with the ministry, to attend the opening of the Silver Jubilee events of the University of Science and Technology last Saturday, and the minister assigned a member of the ministerial office to represent her in a ceremony opening.

The ministry's statement added that the minister accepted the invitation of male and female students to view the book fair, heritage and formation held within the activities, and many pictures of the minister were taken on the tour, including the pictures circulated through the means of communication, which focused on some of them without others.

The statement indicated that the Ministry of Higher Education deals with all universities, regardless of their owner, to review financial or administrative corruption in these institutions through the Empowerment Removal Committee in higher education institutions.

The statement concluded by saying, "We affirm that the ministry is committed to administrative and institutional reform and is working with the rest of the ministries to achieve the priorities of the transitional period and democratic transformation and to achieve the desired change."
