The United States welcomed the formation of a government in Lebanon after a 13-month wait, calling for "urgent measures" to reform the battered economy.

"The United States welcomes the announcement that Lebanon's leaders have agreed to form a new government led by Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati, which gives hope for urgent action to meet the urgent needs and legitimate aspirations of the Lebanese people," State Department spokesman Ned Price said.

He added, "We urge swift approval by Parliament so that this new government can work on concrete reforms to address the deteriorating economic situation in Lebanon."
