In Guerrero, the quake also caused rocks and soil masses to collapse on several roads.

In the capital Mexico City, several buildings began to shake and residents are reported to have taken to the streets to avoid danger.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum writes on Twitter that no serious injuries have been reported from the multimillion-dollar city.

The US surveillance site tsunami.gov has issued a tsunami alert for parts of the US east coast, Hawaii and Guam, among others.
