On September 19, it is time for a referendum on the future of the upper secondary school in Arjeplog.

The proposals are that either a new remote upper secondary school is started or that Hornavanskolan continues to be run under municipal auspices.

Among the students at the school, there is now a concern that Arjeplog will in future be without young people and that the area will die out.

The municipal council believes more people choose to stay

But according to municipal councilor Isak Utsi (S), a remote high school could mean that more young people choose to stay in the municipality, as they hope to offer more programs.

Martin Halling studies vehicle technology at Hornavanskolan.

He moved from Stockholm to Arjeplog three years ago.

- I have made a lot of new friends and done fun things.

It would be a shame if others do not get to experience it, he says.

"Must look after our own young people"

That Arjeplog can now lose young people from other parts of Sweden is something the municipal councilor Isak Utsi regrets.

- Unfortunately, there have been fewer and fewer students from outside who have chosen our high school.

But first and foremost, we need to look after our own young people.

In the clip above, you hear young people at Hornavanskolan about their concerns ahead of the upcoming referendum.
