As the 'delta mutation' spreads in the United States, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases exceeded 40 million on the 7th local time.

Johns Hopkins University in the United States has put the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States at 42,522.

This means that 12% of the U.S. population, or 1 in 8 Americans, has tested positive for COVID-19.

However, the actual number of infected people is likely to be much higher, health experts believe.

Also, more than 4 million people out of 40 million, or a tenth, have appeared in the last four weeks, CNN reported.

According to CNN, the average daily number of confirmed cases in the last 7 days with the Labor Day holiday was 137,270, which is four times the number of 39,355 confirmed during the Labor Day holiday last year when there was no COVID-19 vaccine.

The cumulative death toll stood at 649,198.

The number of confirmed cases and deaths of COVID-19 in the United States is 18.1% and 14.2% of the world's confirmed cases and deaths.
