The law is to be tried at the request of a number of sex workers, as they claim that French law violates the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Sex Purchase Act has existed in France since 2016 and is of the Swedish model, that it is a criminal offense to buy sexual services.

Therefore, the Swedish government is now embarking on the ongoing process to defend the law, which is an unusual measure, Swedish Radio reports.

- It is extremely important for Sweden that we defend our legislation, we were the first in the world to introduce this type of legislation and we have considered it an effective means of stopping human trafficking and sexual exploitation, says Minister of Justice Morgan Johansson ( S) to the radio.

Like Sweden's sex purchase law

Sex sellers in France claim that the ban on buying sex has led to prostitutes being at greater risk of being exposed to violence by sex buyers and that criminalization violates the right to privacy.

According to Morgan Johansson (S), the Sex Purchase Act does not violate the European Convention.

He thinks that Sweden must do everything possible to protect the Swedish sex purchase law.

- An unfavorable result could be important not only for French legislation but also for Swedish legislation, because it is similar, he says.
