• Covid Manila: the longest lockdown in the world, where those who skip the quarantine are shot

He skipped the 21-day quarantine upon arriving in the southern Vietnamese city of Ca Mau.

It was positive.

It infected eight people.

One of them died.

Police traced the source of the infections and reached Le Van Tri, 28.

He was arrested.

On Monday, a court sentenced him to five years in prison for "spreading dangerous infectious diseases."

According to the court ruling: "Tri's breach of the home medical quarantine regulation led many people to become infected with Covid-19, and one person died on August 7, 2021."

It is not the first conviction in the Southeast Asian country for bypassing the restrictions of the pandemic.

In March, another court sentenced a flight attendant for state airline Vietnam Airlines to two years for breaching quarantine upon returning from Japan.

Although, in this case, the sentence was suspended.

Like that of another man sentenced to 18 months in prison for the same reason.

Until now, neither in Vietnam nor in any other country has anyone received a prison sentence as high as Le Van Tri for this type of crime.

Closer to home we have had some cases of so-called supercontagators that violated the protocols, such as that of a man from Mallorca who, last April,

infected 22 people

because he continued going to work and the gym despite having cough and a temperature over 40 ° C.

The news even came out in the international press, which collected statements from his gym mates: "He took off his mask to cough and said that he was going to infect us all."

The National Police arrested him as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of injuries.

Although, unlike the case of Vietnam, the Spanish gave a statement in court and was released with charges.

To find convictions in Spain you have to go back to the time of confinement.

In March 2020, a woman from Tenerife entered prison to serve a 10-month sentence after accumulating two court sentences for disobedience to authority by skipping the quarantine at home.

In Cáceres, a neighbor was sentenced to six months in jail for the same reason.

In Colombia, a man was sentenced to serve 33 months.

Another Colombian took two years.

Where they stopped arresting people for violating sanitary measures was in the Philippines.

Last year, President

Rodrigo Duterte

, after thousands of those arrested for failure to comply with confinement, directly ordered his police to "shoot to kill" those who broke the strict quarantine requirements.

Three days after the order,

the first dead arrived: a 63-year-old farmer

who was shot after passing a police checkpoint in the city of Nasipit, in the southern province of Agusan del Norte.

According to the official version, the police officers stopped him for not wearing a mask.

The man, who was allegedly drunk, pulled out a scythe and threatened the officers.

Worst outbreak in Vietnam

In neighboring Vietnam, news of Le Van Tri's shocking five-year sentence comes as the country is battling its

worst outbreak.

As of April, the coronavirus had killed 35 people.

The death toll had not risen since September 3, 2020. Infections did not exceed 3,000 in a nation with more than 96 million inhabitants.

Five months later, in Vietnam 13,074 people have died and

the cases have skyrocketed to 524,000.

The Delta variant and the low vaccination rate are responsible for the country going from reporting a single case of contagion on April 11 to 12,481 recorded on September 6

About 80% of the deaths and half of the infections have occurred in the economic center, Ho Chi Minh.

From there the infected and condemned Le Van Tri traveled to spread the virus through his city, Ca Mau.

Nine million people live in

the current

epicenter of the coronavirus, Ho Chi Minh

, who have been under a strict blockade since August 23.

Not even residents can go out to buy food.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh deployed soldiers across the city to enforce orders to stay home and help with food delivery to homes.

The outbreaks have spread to 63 cities in the country.

Only 3.3% of the population has received the full course of the vaccine.

But despite the strict measures, the number of infections continues to rise in Ho Chi Minh and more than 200 people die every day.
