Twelve Egyptians were killed Sunday in a bus accident as they left the seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh (eastern Egypt) to reach Cairo, we learned from medical and security sources.

The bus carrying them overturned early Sunday morning some 110 km from the capital on the road connecting the city of Suez (east) to Cairo, also leaving 34 injured, according to the same sources.

7,000 people killed on the road in 2020

All were transported, along with the remains of the victims, to the Suez public hospital, the medical source said on condition of anonymity.

Located on the coast of the Red Sea in the south of the Sinai Peninsula, the city of Sharm el-Sheikh is one of the jewels of Egyptian seaside tourism.

Traffic accidents are common in Egypt, where many roads are poorly maintained and traffic violations are common.

According to official figures, 7,000 people were killed on the road in 2020.
