"Worrying evolution of

online

crimes

against sexual freedom and in particular those that affect minors, which represent 8.5% of the total and an increase of 18.45% compared to the previous year." This is one of the notices that the

Prosecutor's Office

includes in the Report on the actions of the Public Ministry last year, which this Monday was made public at the opening ceremony of the judicial year that has been held in the Supreme Court.

The document highlights that the increase of the so-called

child grooming

was 55% compared to 2019 and 175% compared to 2018. This criminal activity consists of the harassment of minors by adults who involve them in some type of activity sexual, often after posing as minors themselves.

It adds that the crimes of child pornography have remained stable with respect to previous years, "but these data do not seem to respond to the real evolution of the production and trafficking of this illicit material, since they are not usually the object of a complaint."

Despite the increase in crimes against sexual freedom, the accusations made last year by the Prosecutor's Office for

online

crimes

were mainly for crimes of fraud, which led almost three-quarters of the open proceedings. "This is explained because they are the behaviors that are most commonly reported and because there is a hidden number of criminality in other crimes, such as attacks against the freedom and sexual indemnity of minors," says the Prosecutor's Office, which explains in the same way the slight decrease in their accusations for sexual crimes: "Prudence in the valuation given the consolidated ascending line".

In general terms, the

Computer Crime Prosecutor's Office

has detected an increase in online crimes, reflected in an increase of almost 30% in the procedures opened for this reason compared to the previous year.

The increase does not reach that reflected in 2019, which was 45%, which the Prosecutor's Office explains by the circumstances of the confinement, which in its opinion have influenced many criminal activities.

As reflected in the Report, home confinement, curfews and the obligation to wear masks led last year to a strong increase in crimes of serious disobedience and resistance to authority: they grew by 77%, the highest increase in all the categories of offenses.
