• The city of Montpellier offers aid of 50 euros to the most modest families for the first registration of children from 6 to 16 years old in associations.

  • Last year, some 2,100 children benefited from the device.

  • This year, the godmother of the operation is the rugby player Safi N'Diaye.

Judo, swimming, theater or circus… Back to school is also the time to register children for extracurricular activities.

But, for the most modest families, the contributions can be an obstacle to the adhesion of their toddlers to associations.

Since 2020, the city of Montpellier (Hérault) has been supporting them, with the Helping Hand device.

This operation, back this year, helps these homes to the tune of 50 euros for the very first registration in a sports, cultural or leisure association, for people from 6 to 16 years old from Montpellier.

This device is subject to conditions of resources

(information here),

and can be combined with the Sport Pass, issued by the State.

Which is also 50 euros, but which is not limited to a first membership.

"Purchasing power gains"

A way to "promote the well-being and development of the child", and "to support the associative fabric", heavily impacted by the Covid-19 crisis, confides Mylvia Houguet (PS), deputy mayor, in charge of community life. Last year, a little more than 2,100 children and adolescents benefited from it, allowing their registration in a hundred associations, mainly sports (about 90%). "We then hope, and the experience of last year shows that this is more or less the case, that the clubs and associations will ensure the loyalty of young people who have started an activity at home," continues Hervé Martin. (PC), elected to sport. For families, these are purchasing power gains that can be significant. For a family with one, two, three children, that's 50, 100 or 150 euros saved. "

Especially since "young people are more and more static, they must be accompanied to a sporting activity," continues the deputy mayor, professor at the college. This phenomenon has been accentuated by the crisis. »Safi N'Diaye, captain of the MHR and French rugby international, is the godmother of the operation. “In terms of health, both physical and mental, being part of a group, in an association, is essential,” says the player. Specialized educator, Safi N'Diaye has also sometimes come across families whose cost of membership in an association was problematic. “Especially since for certain activities, there is equipment, too, to buy, notes the player. The crampons, the mouthguard, the helmet… Some families cannot afford it. "

Children who, without this device, would not have been able to register, Christel Lavaud met "a lot" of them last year.

"Especially families with a lot of children", confides the president of Montpellier Judo Olympic, in Celleneuve.

The city ensures that all requests for Help from parents, whose situation meets the means test, will be honored.
