Guinea: the international community condemns the coup and the arrest of Condé

The UN and the international community have since Sunday condemned the coup d'état led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya in Guinea.

The United Nations Secretary General called on Sunday for the immediate release of President Alpha Condé.

I am personally following the situation in Guinea very closely.

I strongly condemn any takeover of the government by force of the gun and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde.

An appeal also launched by the African Union, the continental organization which says it condemns "

 any seizure of power by force 

".

According to our information, the AU Peace and Security Council was to meet urgently on Monday to examine the situation in the country and decide on the measures to be taken accordingly.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) called on Sunday for a return to constitutional order under penalty of sanctions.

Nana Akufo-Addo, the current president of the sub-regional organization, demands “

 respect for the physical integrity 

” of the Guinean head of state and calls for his immediate release.

In response, France said it joined the condemnation of ECOWAS and the call for "

 the immediate and unconditional release of President Condé 

", as well as " 

return to constitutional order

 ".

A message also taken up by the European Union and the head of its diplomacy Josep Borrell.

The United States, too, condemned the coup d'état which, they warned, could " 

limit 

" the American capacity to support Guinea, " 

while the country is on the road to national unity and seeks to offer a better future to the Guinean people

 ”.

On Monday morning, Algeria said it was monitoring the situation with deep concern, rejecting any unconstitutional changes.

The international community as a whole condemns this seizure of power by force and the arrest of President Condé.

However, some neighboring countries such as Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire have still not reacted to this coup, more than 24 hours after the start of the events.
