Wolfgang Schäuble would like to become President of Parliament again after the federal election.
"I'm completely at peace with myself about what I'm doing now, I really enjoy doing it," said the 78-year-old CDU politician of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.
"And what comes next, the voters decide first," he added.
Schäuble's return to the Bundestag, to which he has been a senior member for 49 years, is considered certain.
However, the President of the Bundestag is traditionally made up of the strongest parliamentary group.
Looking at the polls, things could get tight for Schäuble - the SPD is currently clearly ahead of the CDU / CSU.
No more government office
Regarding the statement of a newspaper that he was “the best candidate” for the Union as Chancellor, Schäuble said: “Occasionally one likes to read that one is or was actually quite capable.” The former Minister of the Interior and Finance, the turns 79 a week before the election, but no longer takes part.
