Protest against the car show in Munich: More than 50 cyclists went to the barricades in front of the exhibition tower in Frankfurt on Monday morning.

Instead of applause there was a bicycle bell for the speakers.

The ADFC Frankfurt, the General Bicycle Club Germany, had called for the protest against the IAA auto show.

By bicycle relay it was first with a police escort to the Frankfurt S-Bahn station at the stadium.

Half of the participants then continued their way to Darmstadt by bike.

During the next few days, the participants in the campaign plan to travel via Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Augsburg to the Munich auto show.

"Here in Frankfurt we want to take a stand against an automotive industry that is not contributing to the climate target in Germany and instead is bringing ever larger, more environmentally harmful cars onto the market," announced Bertram Giebeler over the microphone in front of the exhibition tower.

"Rally" to Munich

He is the transport policy spokesman for the ADFC Frankfurt and co-organizer of the demonstration.

“Today's campaign is the kick-off event for the trip to Munich,” he continues.

The aim is to join the big “rally” from Augsburg to Munich on September 11th, to which tens of thousands of participants are expected on their bikes, according to the ADFC.

The International Exhibition (IAA) is one of the most important automobile fairs in the world. Until 2019 it took place every two years in Frankfurt. Even then, the ADFC raised awareness of the harmful effects of motor vehicles on the climate with protests against the show. This year the fair will take place in Munich for the first time. In Frankfurt the ADFC is anything but sad about the change of location of the fair. "We got something much better for it," says Giebeler. "In 2022 the Eurobike, the largest bicycle fair in the world, is coming to Frankfurt"
