The assembly of the peoples of the Amazon has tabled a motion in twelve points, concerning the protection of

the Amazon rainforest

, which exceeds the international objectives of protecting 30% of the planet by 2030.

Protect 80% of the forest by 2025

Claudette Labonté, delegate of the peoples of French Guiana: "

The most important for us was really the

"

80-25

"

, that is to say to protect 80% of the protected forest in 2025 and if possible even before because it is threatened. She's been threatened for years. So we are asking for a "stop" and that we stop extending things to 2030, that we act now.

 "

For José Gregorio Diaz, coordinator of the Congress of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (Coica), the whole planet is concerned: “

This motion is the Amazon alive for Humanity.

So it's not just for us, but for the French as well.

We are without funding and without rights, we are asking for funding that can help us protect the territories that we are already protecting better than anyone.

"

If the indigenous peoples' motion is accepted, it will be part of the negotiations for the next biodiversity conference, COP15.
