Ahmed Shams El-Din .. New Zealand reveals the identity of the perpetrator of the stabbing crime in Auckland

New Zealand's government said it had tried for years to deport the gunman who stabbed seven people in an Auckland mall last week after it released more details about the attacker after a court order was lifted.

Court documents released on Sunday identified the attacker as Ahmed Asil Muhammad Shamsuddin, 32, a Tamil Muslim from Sri Lanka.

Shamsuddin arrived in New Zealand 10 years ago on a student visa for refugee status that was granted to him in 2013.

Shamseddin drew the attention of the police and security services in 2016 after expressing his sympathy on Facebook with militant attacks, war videos and comments inciting violent extremism.

The government said in a statement that it was discovered that he had obtained refugee status by fraud.

She added that the authorities had begun the process of revoking his refugee status.

Police shot Shams El Din moments after he began stabbing people on Friday.

The attacker was convicted and imprisoned for nearly three years before being released in July.

"In July of this year, I met privately with officials and expressed my concern that the law would allow a person who had obtained immigration status fraudulently to remain here and poses a threat to our national security," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

Shams al-Din's attack raised questions about why he was allowed to remain free if the authorities had deemed it necessary to put him under close supervision.

On Saturday, Ardern pledged to pass a law criminalizing planning a terrorist attack and to tighten other anti-terrorism laws.

Shamsuddin's family issued a statement to local New Zealand media describing their shock at the attack.

"We are saddened by this horrific event," said the statement, published by state-run 1 News.

"We hope to find out with all of you what happened in the Asil case and what we could all have done to prevent it," the family said.
