According to the radio station, the terrorist's name was Ahmed Athill Mohamed Shamsudin.

It is clarified that he is a 32-year-old citizen of Sri Lanka.

According to reports, the country's authorities have long sought to annul his refugee status.

The terrorist arrived in New Zealand in October 2011 on a student visa, and in December 2013 received refugee status. 

In 2016, he received an official warning for posting extremist content online, and in 2017 he was arrested at Oakland airport when it was suspected that he was on his way to Syria.

During a search, the police found a hunting knife and fundamentalist materials in his apartment.

As a result, he pleaded guilty to distributing prohibited materials and was sentenced to supervision for this violation in September 2018.

In the same year, the authorities began a procedure to annul his status.

He was later arrested for buying another hunting knife.

During a new search, he was found with a large amount of materials related to the Islamic State * terrorist group.

In May 2021, a jury found him guilty on two charges, one of which concerned the possession of IS materials propagandizing terrorism.

On September 3, it became known that as a result of an attack by an unknown person with a knife on visitors to a supermarket, six people were injured.

Later, the number of victims increased to seven. 

The Prime Minister of New Zealand called the attack on the supermarket visitors a terrorist attack.
