The Cameroonian winger of Nevers (Pro D2) Chris Ambadiang was the victim of a racist insult from an opponent of Provence Rugby, the Provencal club confirmed on Saturday, presenting his "apologies" and promising "sanctions" to against his player.

Ambadiang had denounced earlier on his Instagram account the incident that occurred Friday during the 26-23 victory of Provence Rugby over Nevers on behalf of the second day.

He accuses an opposing player, without naming him, of having said "I'm going to burn you, banana eater", before coming to apologize later, saying that his words were made "in the heat of the moment" .

"It's crazy to think that in the world of rugby such racist incidents could be put under the rug," regretted the 22-year-old Cameroonian.

Provence Rugby presented in a statement "our apologies" to Ambadiang and "to all those who may be shocked by the situation".

The leaders of the Provençal club announced that they would summon the player concerned and "put in place sanctions commensurate with the gravity of the facts".

The National Rugby League (LNR) let it be known on Twitter that it would take a decision only after "having taken cognizance of the match officials' reports and brought together the presidents of the two clubs over the weekend".

"The LNR condemns and will be uncompromising with regard to any comments or behavior with a racist connotation committed in particular on a field", she underlined.
