The first six cases of the Indian Delta variant were detected in mid-August in Niger and confirmed by the Institut Pasteur in Dakar.

According to the summary made by the Minister of Public Health at the last Council of Ministers, the Delta variant was detected in people who have not been vaccinated.

The six cases have been identified in Niamey.

These are four Nigeriens, who have returned to their country and who have infected two others.

Quickly taken care of, they were treated and cured.

Isolated cases of the Nigerian variant

Also according to the Minister of Public Health, Doctor Illiassou Mainassara, the sequencing also made it possible to isolate thirteen other cases of the Nigerian variant, including eight in Niamey and five in Agadez, in the north of the country.

All technical teams are on alert and in-depth contact tracing is said to be underway.

Several measures have been taken to counter the Delta variant.

Strengthening surveillance and managing migrants in Niger in Samaka, on the Algerian border in particular, in the various vaccination centers, the teams are hard at work for the administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

More than a million doses of vaccines have been received in Niger since last March, but according to the Minister of Public Health, vaccination campaigns attract very few people.

Only 4% of the 21 million Nigeriens are vaccinated.
