The head of the National Committee for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation in the country, Dr. Ali Al-Obaidli, stated that 46 people in the country have donated their organs after brain death, and 129 organ transplant operations have been performed since the adoption of the relevant law until today, indicating that organ donation has become a tangible reality, Since the issuance of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the State, Federal Decree Law No. (5) of 2016, regarding the organization and transplantation of human organs and tissues.


Al-Obaidly explained to "Emirates Today" that kidney transplants topped the list of transplanted organs since the law was issued, with 78 kidneys, followed by the liver with 31, the heart with 11, the lungs with six operations, while three pancreatic transplants were performed.


He said: “Raising the percentage of organ donation after death, and reaching global levels, is one of the most important goals of the National Committee, by enabling the community to exercise its right to donate, as there are more than 4000 kidney failure patients in the country, and many also suffer from liver and heart failure. Therefore, the National Committee for Organ Transplantation seeks, in cooperation with all the concerned health authorities in the country, to enhance the culture of society towards donation after death, and exchange kidney donation inside and outside the country.”


He continued: "Exchange kidney donation is one of the latest ways to increase the chances of kidney transplantation from living donors for dialysis patients, who have a donor but do not have matching donors, and by exchanging donors it is possible to proceed with the donation and transplant procedures."


He stated that work is underway among the concerned authorities to make the registration of the desire to donate after death in a simple and quick way, through the “Hayat” application, as well as studying the possibility of including it within the Emirati identity data, and training various authorities to register the desire to donate to individuals, so that all of them are aimed at Registration directly and indirectly in the "Hayat" program.


He stressed that the committee worked to overcome the challenges facing the organ transplantation project in the country, through initiatives and programs, based on the application of main axes, which are: “Building an integrative partnership between government and private health agencies, charitable institutions, and international institutions with expertise in the field, with the aim of Building and developing a sustainable program, expanding the exchange kidney transplantation, informing the public of the risks of resorting to illegal donation programs, following up on patients through treatment centers abroad, and taking all necessary measures to reduce this phenomenon that threatens the life of the patient with organic failure as well as the donor, as well as the negative aspects Legal and Ethical.


The topics also include “creating a governmental platform for communication to raise community awareness of organ donation, developing an application to record expressions of desire, developing a national registry for patients with organ failure and donors, and the need to integrate electronic data to identify patients in need of donation, and prevent organic failure to reduce the segment of patients who need to donate.” Cultivation, to undertake initiatives to prevent diseases that lead to organ failure.”


He added that one of these axes is also the adoption of performance indicators based on quality standards for the operational and practical procedures of the donation and organ transplantation program, in line with local and international laws and legislations and international best practices, and the preparation of specialized training plans, such as training intensive care and emergency cadres to identify potential donors, through Diagnosing brain death using the approved protocol, and training a specialized team from various departments to identify potential donors through death diagnosis.


46 people in the country donated their organs after brain death.
