Kathy Hochhol became the first female governor of New York state a few days ago, after the former governor, Andrew Cuomo, resigned over allegations of sexual harassment. The position of governor is the highest political office in the fourth most populous US state.

Who is this lady? Described by her predecessor as "smart and efficient," the 62-year-old Democrat is from Buffalo, New York. Hochhol has been an advocate for women facing domestic and sexual violence throughout her career. She led a campaign against Cuomo to fight sexual assault on college campuses.

In 2011, Hochhol ran in a special election for a congressional seat in a Republican-leaning district that includes most of the area between Buffalo and Rochester, following the sudden resignation of Republican Representative Chris Lee. Republican Jane Corwin was heavily favored at first, but Hoechul scored a surprise victory, after she was able to coax Corwin into a controversial Republican proposal to reform Medicare. She won 47% of the vote to Corwin's 43%, with third-party candidates receiving a total of 10% of the vote. She held that seat until 2012, but lost it to Republican Chris Collins, after the district was redrawn and renamed the 27th Congressional District.

Governor's Team

She joined the Governor's Team in 2014, taking on the role of ceremonies as Deputy Governor.

Hochhol is from a steel-mining family whose grandparents escaped extreme poverty in Ireland before making New York their home. One of six members of the family, she received her BA from Syracuse University and her BA in Law from Catholic University of America. From there, she began working as an aide on Capitol Hill and worked in local positions prior to being elected to Congress.

In 2006, she and her mother and aunt established Kathleen Marie, a transitional home for victims of domestic violence. In 2008, she sparked controversy while working as a county clerk in Erie, due to her opposition to then-governor Elliot Spitzer's plan to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. She retracted the comments 10 years later, saying, "It's a completely different era out there."

In August, Hochhol joined the group of politicians who denounced the former governor's sexual harassment of women, saying his resignation was "the right thing to do", describing his behavior as "disgusting and illegal". In her first comment after Cuomo's resignation, she said she wanted the public to know she was ready to escalate. She added that she was not aware of Cuomo's alleged behavior, and that she had not been close to him "physically or otherwise, during that long time".

The first woman governor of

Hochhol is the first woman to become the governor of New York after nearly 250 years, after this position has been held by male governors, and is the tenth deputy governor to hold this position. Ms. Hoshol is also the first female governor from outside New York City and its immediate suburbs since Franklin D. Roosevelt left office in 1932.

Hoshol also faces early questions about a potential conflict of interest in relation to her husband, William Hoshol Jr., general counsel and senior vice president at the giant hospitality and gambling company. in Delaware North, a company that has a large business in the state. In her new role, Hochhol will control the New York Gaming Commission, which regulates the large and growing gambling market.

“Hoshol, who never had the power as deputy governor to really influence things, will now have all the power as governor to be able to give the green light and influence deals between state regulators, state agencies, public authorities, and the state of Delaware,” says CEO John Kayne. North». "The bottom line: It's in a place to make Northern Delaware a lot of money if it's so inclined, by giving them preferential treatment and putting its thumbs on the scale," he adds.

Asked about these concerns, Hochhol said she sought the advice of "external ethicists to come up with a strict policy, so no one would ever question my husband's involvement in anything relating to the state of New York."

“My husband was a federal attorney general for 30 years, so even when I was in Congress, we used to keep our work very separate,” Hochhol said. It affects the integrity of our past and present positions.”
