The school in Svappavaara has been threatened with closure in several rounds over the years, but according to the new school structure that was launched during the autumn, the school will remain with primary and middle school.

The reason why the ten students in grades five and six have to change schools is instead the lack of teachers.

- We have had an advertisement out since early this spring without getting an answer, says acting school principal Conny Persson.

Kiruna municipality has another nine pedagogical positions for different schools advertised, while the proportion of qualified teachers in primary school last school year was only 57 percent, which is among the lower in the country.

Received notice one week before school starts

The municipality continues to seek teachers for Svappavaara and parents of the students will try to help spread the message about a small but pleasant school in a village with good future prospects.

But they believe that they should have entered at an earlier stage.

- We were told this a week before school started, but it may not have been news to them that we would end up in this situation, says Theresa Savonen.

"Usually just take and not give back"

The question of the grades will come back to Svappavaara.

The parents remember that even the move from high school to Vittangi seven years ago would only be a temporary solution.

- They usually just take and not give back.

The chance is also quite small that they will be able to find teachers, says Cosmin Pop.
