Mikis Theodorakis, a Greek composer who worked on works that are widely known around the world, such as the music of the movie "Zorba the Greek", has passed away.

Mikis Theodorakis was born on the island of Chios in Greece in 1925 and participated in the resistance movement when Greece was occupied by German troops in World War II.



In 1967, when he was a leftist member, he was arrested against a military coup and fled to Paris, France, after his release.



After the collapse of the military government, he returned to Greece and continued to compose while serving as a member of the Diet, producing more than 200 songs such as film music and opera.



Of these, the music of the movie "Zorba the Greek" is a song with an impressive light melody of Bouzouki, a stringed instrument with a guitar-like tone, and is widely popular in the world including Japan.



According to the official website, Mr. Theodorakis died on the 2nd at the age of 96.



Theodorakis has been credited with contributing to the development of Greece in a wide range of fields, including music, culture and politics, and the Greek government has announced that it will be in mourning for three days.
