02 September 2021 The Council of Ministers today approved the decree law to combat the fires that have devastated the Italian territory in recent weeks, with the aim of strengthening forest fire prevention actions and improving the ability to actively fight fires.

The governance of fire prevention and financial resources are redesigned to strengthen the operational capacity of the state components involved in fighting the fires, with specific provisions in favor of the infrastructures of the internal areas. In particular, the substitutive power of the Regions is envisaged in the event that the Municipalities fail to update the land register of burnt land within the foreseen time frame and the preparation by the Civil Protection of a three-year National Plan for technological updating of the prevention and active fight against fires, to which 40 million are allocated to acquire other operating assets. Penalties for crimes were also increased.

Another 7.5 million are allocated to the National Institute of Geophysics to strengthen forecasting and prevention activities. This provision, notes the Mipaaf, follows the one already issued by the Government on August 26 which declares a state of emergency in the regions of Calabria, Molise, Sardinia and Sicily due to the high number of fires that broke out in these territories.
