The special relationship between Cristiano Ronaldo and former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson was "the key" to his return to the Reds this summer, the five-time Portuguese Ballon d'Or revealed on Wednesday.

"Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father of football to me," CR7 told the Reds website.

"I really like him and he was the main key to my signing at Manchester United," he adds.

Ronaldo left Juventus on August 27 to return to Old Trafford, 12 years after leaving the club that made him a star and in which he rubbed shoulders with the Scottish technician.

"He helped me a lot, learned a lot of things. In my opinion, of course he had an important role, because of the relationship we have. We stay in touch all the time and he's an incredible person." .

The Portuguese, who will be 37 in February, also recalled his desire to "write history" with Manchester United.

He also added that his departure from Juventus was "the best decision" he has made.

Cristiano Ronaldo could make his comeback with United in the league on September 11 at Old Trafford, against Newcastle.
