Manuel Valls returns to France in a new hat.

The former French Prime Minister "formalized his resignation from his post as municipal councilor in Barcelona, a decision he had already announced a few months ago," tweeted "Barcelona pel Canvi" (Barcelona for change), the Manuel Valls' political group within the city council.

Two years after having failed to conquer his hometown, he is therefore back in France where he will become a columnist in the RMC and BFMTV broadcasts in September.

"Proud to have curbed independence"

“Very honored to have been able to serve Barcelona during these two years and proud to have curbed Catalan independence” during the municipal elections of May 2019, also posted on the same social network Manuel Valls.

After the failure of his presidential ambitions in 2017 in France, Manuel Valls ran for mayor of Barcelona but suffered a setback by arriving only fourth with the support of the liberal anti-independence party Ciudadanos.

Manuel Valls then gave his voice to left-wing activist Ada Colau, allowing her to be re-elected as mayor of Barcelona and thus blocking the way for Catalan independence candidate Ernest Maragall.

This decision had led to a rupture between Manuel Valls and Ciudadanos.

At the beginning of March, Manuel Valls had indicated that he would not run for mayor of Barcelona in 2023. Since then, the former heavyweight of the Socialist Party has shown, during the French regional elections in June, his public support for the president of the Ile-de-France region, the ex-LR Valérie Pécresse, reelected and now a candidate for the presidential election.

He also increased the number of interviews to promote his book, “Not a drop of French blood”, published in March by Grasset.
