August 31, 2021 Despite the difficulties and dissonant starting positions, the EU interior ministers "approved a" final declaration "text which, compared to the one originally envisaged, has been enriched with a reference to a resettlement forum that should be held shortly. ". This was explained by the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese, at the end of the extraordinary Council on Afghanistan.

"All countries have shown their full willingness to an orderly and complete approach to the arrivals of Afghans - he added - and also to participate in welcoming people fleeing difficult situations".

Lamorgese specified that the EU interior ministers "approved a final declaration text" which was also enriched with a "reference to the hybrid threat". Furthermore, "a reference was made to all the routes, therefore particular attention by all countries, by the European Commission, to all the other routes which in any case have similar complications and which are determined by contingent situations, because it is a very complex problem that must be seen in its entirety ", added Lamorgese.

The line of non-acceptance

The line of less welcome was expressed among others by the Luxembourg premier. "We cannot take all" Afghans but "we can accept a certain number. We can at least open the door so that the Commission can make proposals", said Jean Asselborn, who arriving at the extraordinary meeting of EU interior ministers on Afghanistan he said he disagreed with the draft final statement of the meeting. "I will fight so that a link can be established with what the G7 affirmed. We in the EU too can activate programs to return to give hope. The United Kingdom will welcome 20,000 refugees. The EU must also give a signal".
