Russia proposes to hold a Quartet meeting on the Middle East at the UN General Assembly

Evstigneeva noted that Russia is in favor of restarting direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

“We call on our colleagues in the Quartet to respond positively to our initiative to hold a ministerial meeting in September in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High-Level Week, as well as consultations in an expanded format with the participation of regional states,” the diplomat said.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia added that at the moment in the region there is still a risk of escalation of clashes in the border areas of the Gaza Strip into full-scale hostilities.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin said that Russia expects to hold a meeting of the Middle East Quartet as part of a high-level week in New York in September.
