INTERVIEW

On the right, the candidatures are jostling for the presidential election of 2022. But at Les Républicains, the question of the primary is not yet decided. On September 26, the political family will have to agree on the candidate selection process. Five personalities have already announced a candidacy: Valérie Pécresse, Eric Ciotti, Philippe Juvin, the entrepreneur Denis Payre and the former Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, who was the guest of Europe 1.

From this Monday, the right will consult its activists to assess the advisability of a primary but also to determine the perceived qualities necessary to access the Elysee Palace.

"It's a light, nothing else", specifies Michel Barnier, on Europe 1. "We are not going to appoint our candidate from a poll."

"All those who wish to have the support of this political family, who claim to represent their project or call on activists to support them must respect the rules of the game. It is a question of loyalty, of mutual trust."

A desire to work as a team

Laurent Wauquiez and Bruno Retailleau, on the other hand, announced that they would not appear for the race at the Elysee Palace.

They will have a role to play for the family of the right, assures Michel Barnier.

"We are going to need these people who are very talented," he emphasizes.

Former Brexit negotiator, several times ministers, deputy and senator, Michel Barnier defends his experience and wishes to make respect the "cardinal line of this campaign" while defending his "new ideas".
