30 August 2021 In the latest tragedy confirmed by the Spanish authorities on the migratory route between West Africa and the Canary Islands, 29 people died, including 7 children, of the 55 who had started the journey.

This was claimed by the NGO Caminando Fronteras, specialized in interventions in this area, after having collected the testimonies of the survivors sighted adrift last Thursday on the high seas and rescued in the following hours, and on the basis of official data.

According to Helena Maleno, a spokesperson for the NGO, the migrants had spent 12 days at sea. Four bodies were found on board the makeshift boat they were traveling on. As reported by the Canary Emergency Service after the survivors arrived in port on Saturday, a woman who was alive when the rescue arrived died following a cardiac arrest. According to the Efe news agency, the victim was pregnant.

At least 289 migrants have landed in the Canary Islands since Saturday: this is the balance of the last weekend on the route between north-west Africa and the Spanish archipelago, according to data released by the regional emergency service and the Efe news agency . The latest landings took place last night in Gran Canaria. Some of the boats that arrived over the weekend landed without intervention by the authorities, while others needed rescue at sea. According to the latest data from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, dating back to 15 August, at least 8,222 people have already landed in the Canary Islands this year, 144.4% more than in the same period in 2020.
