The wife of the Greek ambassador to Brazil, Kyriakos Amiridis, whom she had murdered in 2016 by her lover, was sentenced to 31 years in prison, it was announced on Sunday from a judicial source.

The lover, who confessed to the crime, was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Kyriakos Amidis, 59 years old at the time of his assassination, was living in Brasilia and spending his Christmas holidays in Rio de Janeiro with his wife Françoise de Souza Oliveira and her daughter, when his disappearance was reported.

A few days later, the charred remains of the diplomat were discovered in a charred rental car under a bridge in Nova Iguaçu, near the state capital.

A "carefully conceived and premeditated" crime

The investigation, which was based on numerous clues including blood on a sofa and images from surveillance cameras, had led to the indictment of Sérgio Gomes Moreira Filho, police officer and lover of Françoise de Souza Oliveira.

"The crime was carefully conceived and premeditated" by the wife of the diplomat, underlined the judge Anna Christina da Silveira Fernandes in the statement of the sentence.

"According to the testimonies gathered, the accused planned and conceived [the assassination], being the mastermind of this whole macabre plot," she added.

A third accused was appearing at the trial in Nova Criminal Court.

It is about a relative of the police officer, sentenced to one year in prison for having helped to transport and conceal the body of the diplomat.
