A mountain lion attacked a five-year-old boy in southern California, authorities said.

California Wildlife Department spokesman Captain Patrick Foy said the 65-pound (30 kg) lion attacked the boy while he was playing near his Calabasas home last Thursday and "dragged him about 45 yards" through the front lawn.

Foy said the boy had serious injuries to his head and upper torso, but his condition is stable, and he is now in a Los Angeles hospital. "The real hero of this story is his mother, because she completely saved her son's life," Foy said. The mother was inside the house when she heard a commotion outside, and when she came out and saw the lion trying to kill her son she started punching him with her bare hands and away from her son. The parents immediately took their son to the hospital, and then reported the incident to law enforcement authorities, and a wildlife officer was sent to the scene. Once at the house, the officer spotted a mountain lion crouching in the bush near the house.

"Given the animal's behavior, the prison warden thought it was likely to attack again, so he shot and killed it on site," the Department of Wildlife said in a statement.

The statement said that subsequent DNA tests confirmed that the lion was responsible for attacking the child.

Another mountain lion spotted in the area, which was released into the wild unharmed, was also calmed after it was confirmed that it was not involved in the attack.
