In a party reminiscent of a Thousand and One Nights, the son of Nigeria's president, Yusuf Buhari, married the daughter of a prominent ruler in the northwestern state of Kano in a lavish party over the weekend.

The weddings continued over two days, amid strict security measures, at the palace of Amir Beshi, the father of the bride, in the presence of thousands of well-wishers.

Fleets of private jets were seen parked on the tarmac of Kano airport, angering locals on social media.

Days before that, the bride and groom had hosted their friends in pre-wedding festivities, with a special polo tournament.

The bride caught the eye when she appeared on stage as the heroine of the children's fairy tale Princess "Frozen", and the off-the-shoulder bejeweled wedding gown caught the attention of Kano's Islamic police, known as the Hisba, as well as strict religious watchers on social media.

Yusuf is the only son of President Buhari, and the newlyweds met in the United Kingdom where they were both studying. Among the prominent Nigerians who attended the lavish ceremony, on Saturday, were the country's Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and Buhari's 2019 election challenger, Atiku Abu Bukar.

The famous Islamic cleric, Ahmed Abubakar Gomi, strongly criticized the appearances of wealth and extravagance displayed by the Nigerian ruling class at the wedding, and says: “Someone told me that all the private planes in Nigeria were chartered for the wedding of Ibn Bukhari, some people in families, in the bush and cities. They go hungry, citizens face various problems, and yet politicians spend public money for their own good.”

Health authorities in Nigeria also expressed concern about the crowd at the president’s son’s wedding, after the recent rise in “Covid” infections in the country, weeks after the discovery of the highly contagious “delta” type, and according to media reports, the groom paid the bride-price of 500,000 naira. (about $1,200) for the bride's family, a huge sum for many families in the poor northern region.
