Camp monitors, lifeguards, waiters and even street sweepers.

These are some of the

most common

summer jobs

in the city of

Madrid

during the summer months.

Young people are the most likely to occupy this type of

temporary jobs

that provide them with extra pay and that, in many other cases, they combine with their studies during the course.

Marcos López is a 20-year-old Criminology student who works during the month of August as a

street sweeper

.

"It is rare to be in Madrid working when all your friends are out and the city is so empty," he explains to this newspaper in a telephone conversation.

However, he assures that his schedule does not prevent him from making plans during the day: "I work from seven in the morning until 1.30 pm, so it is not so bad."

Despite the fact that he earns

more than 1,000 euros a month

, Marcos is clear that he only wants to dedicate himself to this job to "

get some money

."

For the same reason, he says that he also does "some small jobs" during the course while studying the degree.

For Gonzalo de Luna, another twenty-something law student, working during the summer is already something traditional. "It is the second year that I work as a

lifeguard in a

private

pool

and before the pandemic I worked in a cinema," he tells this newspaper. The young man took a life-saving course -with a cost of approximately 300 euros- at the age of 18, and since then, he has been leaving his curriculum for the swimming pools of Madrid.

"I usually do it to

get money for my expenses,

" he says. For Gonzalo it is not a problem to stay in Madrid without a summer vacation. "Most of my friends are also working as lifeguards. It is an

easy and generally relaxed job

. I find the work of a waiter more suffered, for example," she is sincere.

As a clerk at her uncle's bar during the summer, another young woman, Nathaly Martinez, also thinks hers is a "busy" job. Although it is her first year as a

waitress

, she perceives that, as a result of the pandemic, "many more people have stayed in Madrid than in other years." However, for her this is good news because

she stays "entertained"

and also earns "extra" for her pocket.

In the case of Rubén Serrano, a young

assistant at a school for autistic children

in Canillas, working in the summer is not a problem: "I was at school during June and July and it was not hard for me. Many days I went to the pool with the boys and I forgot that I was in Madrid and that all my friends were on vacation ".

His work schedule did not take up much time either, as he spent six hours a day in the center and had the weekends off.

"My salary was

more than 1,100 euros a month

, I was very happy," he says.

Rubén explains to this newspaper that during the course he works at the same center and by contract it was his turn this summer.

However, he says that last year he did it voluntarily "to get some savings."
