Protection against coronavirus infection COVID-19 gradually increases within six months after vaccination with the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.

This was reported by the press service of the RDIF based on the results of a study conducted in Argentina.

"Observations suggest that the body's defense against new strains of coronavirus containing mutations that avoid protective immunity increases within six months after vaccination as a result of the ongoing maturation of neutralizing antibodies and an increase in their neutralizing effectiveness," the scientists said.

According to the material published on the Medrxiv portal, the scientists analyzed 1.8 thousand blood serum samples from people vaccinated with Sputnik V.

The formation of antibodies and their ability to resist various mutations of coronavirus infection - strains "alpha", "beta", "gamma", "delta" and "lambda" - were studied for six months after vaccination.

"As noted in the study, a significant increase in the index of neutralizing ability (NPI) was observed after 120 days compared with the values observed within 42 days after vaccination," - said the press service of the RDIF.

A study in Argentina “is extremely important in demonstrating the formation of longer immunity to COVID-19 with the Sputnik V vaccine,” added the RDIF.

The Sputnik V vaccine was registered in Argentina in December 2020.
