On the front of the fight against Covid-19, Australia recorded a very bad record this Thursday.

The country has seen more than a thousand coronavirus contaminations, a first since the start of the pandemic due to the spread of the Delta variant.

New South Wales, a state that includes Sydney, recorded a record 1,039 cases in 24 hours.

The wave that began in the country's largest city in mid-June has more than 15,000 contaminations and is spreading to smaller towns, causing the return of restrictions and lockdowns in Southwest Australia.

Easing of restrictions soon

Despite these rising numbers and increasing pressure on hospitals, State Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian announced a slight easing of restrictions for people vaccinated from mid-September.

When 70% of the eight million inhabitants of this state are fully vaccinated, gatherings of five people will be allowed outdoors in non-sensitive areas.

“It was the best option for the mental health and well-being of our population while presenting the least risk,” said Gladys Berejiklian.

She further assured that the health system was able to cope with the additional pressure through capacity building, promising that "everyone who needs help will receive this help."

The slow start of vaccination

The announcement comes as authorities extended lockdown for the rest of New South Wales to September 10, worried about the increase in the number of cases in areas Deputy Prime Minister John Barilaro described as "a powder keg ready to explode ”.

More than half of the 25 million Australians are currently in lockdown, including Sydney residents forced to stay at home for over two months.

The vaccination campaign, initially very slow, has accelerated in recent weeks with the delivery of new doses, allowing a third of the adult population to be fully vaccinated.

The country has recorded nearly 48,000 infections and 1,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
