He was indicted for murder and remanded in custody.

In Brest (Finistère), a detainee imprisoned in the remand center will be prosecuted for causing the death of his fellow detainee on the night of Monday to Tuesday in his cell.

The lifeless body of this 34-year-old man had been discovered by guards, alerted by the third occupant of the cell.

On his arrival on the scene, the prison staff tried, in vain, to resuscitate the victim.

One of the detainees immediately admitted the violence.

The autopsy carried out by the forensic doctor "revealed numerous traces of blows to the head, neck and the whole body", specifies the Brest prosecutor's office.

Death is believed to be due either to a rupture of the larynx, compatible with a strangulation, or to blows to the head.

According to the two detainees present, the respondent strangled the victim with a cloth.

The suspect kept silent

Aged 25, the suspect was imprisoned for sentences of nine and ten months handed down in 2020 by the Lorient criminal court for insults, death threats, violence and driving without a license.

“Throughout the custody, the self-appointed suspect asserted his right to silence.

He did not provide any explanation on the facts, ”explains prosecutor Camille Miansoni.

The respondent was indicted for murder and imprisoned.

The third occupant of the cell, a 31-year-old man imprisoned for two three-month sentences handed down by the Brest criminal court, was taken into custody, before being left free, "appearing more as a witness than as a suspect ".

The Brest remand center accommodates more than 400 prisoners, for a maximum capacity of less than 250 prisoners.

The cells are not supposed to accommodate more than two people, said a union source.
