Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, winner of the National Highest Science and Technology Award, and researcher of the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Zheng Zhemin, died of illness in Beijing on August 25, 2021, at the age of 97.

Zheng Zhemin was born on October 2, 1924 in Jinan, Shandong, and his native place is Ningbo, Zhejiang.

He graduated from Tsinghua University in 1947 with a bachelor's degree.

He received a master's degree and a doctorate degree from California Institute of Technology in the United States in 1949 and 1952, respectively.

In 1980, he was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (academician).

In 1994, he was selected and hired as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

In his early years, Zheng Zhemin was engaged in the research of thermal stress, vibration and hydroelasticity, and seismic engineering mechanics. He is good at using mechanics theory to solve practical engineering problems, and proposed fluid elastoplastic body models and theories.

In 1964, "Explosive Forming Mechanism and Application" won the first prize of National Industrial New Products Exhibition. In 1982, "Fluid Elastoplastic Model and Its Application in Nuclear Explosion and Armor Piercing" won the second prize of National Natural Science. In 1990, "Explosion" "Handling of Underwater Soft Foundation" won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award and Chen Kah Kee Technology Science Award in 1993.

Zheng Zhemin had studied under Qian Weichang and Qian Xuesen successively, and Qian Weichang called him "one of my best students."

Zheng Zhemin did not live up to expectations. He inherited the two teachers' love for the motherland, pursuit of science, and dedication to career. He advocated and practiced "doing first-rate work" throughout his life.

He once said: "I have gone from the past to the present, and there is no clear route. But one thing is certain, and that is the desire to prosper the country and strengthen the people." (Guangming Daily, all-media reporter Li Yuan)
