is a boon for digital, with first a boom in the time spent on screens.

While China spent 5-6 hours a day on the internet before the pandemic, in the spring of 2020, many Chinese found themselves literally glued to their mobile or their computer: more than 7 hours a day on the internet.

Live-streaming e-commerce and sales platforms take the profits

At the top of the sectors that have benefited the most are e-commerce platforms and live streaming sales on networks.

E-commerce accounted for nearly 45% of retail sales last year and we are expected to cross the 50% mark in 2021.

The live streaming market is expected to reach 613 million customer-users by the end of 2021.

Beijing wants to regulate the digital sector and take advantage of it

The other upward trend is online courses, which exploded during health restrictions.

Up to 50 million Chinese pupils and students from 30 provinces were registered on the DingTalk platform in 2020, for example.

Educational apps in China now have more than 70 million users.

Faced with its explosion,

the Chinese state wants to regulate the sector

. But some even speak of a digital revolution worthy of the cultural revolution: the authorities are currently slashing at all levels. Xi Jinping's China finds that red capitalism, and in particular this internet sector whose profits soared during the health crisis, has not put enough in the pot for the community, not enough redistributed to society.
