Nicaragua: three children of ex-president Violeta Chamorro accused of money laundering

Some 34 opponents, including seven presidential contenders, have been arrested in Nicaragua since June by police.

Three children of the former President of Nicaragua Violeta Barrios de Chamorro were accused Tuesday, August 24, in particular of money laundering in the context of investigations against political opponents, AFP learned from an official source.

, under house arrest since June 2, and politician Pedro Joaquín Chamorro , arrested on June 25, the public prosecutor said in a statement.

Cristiana Chamorro had already been accused in June of “ 

abusive management and ideological lies in connection with money laundering 

”.

The prosecutor's office also charged her on Tuesday with embezzlement and improper withholding of funds.

According to the prosecution, the alleged acts were committed through the Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation (FVBCH), a press freedom training and defense center that Cristiana Chamorro directed for twenty years, until in February.

Carlos Fernando Chamorro is accused of money laundering, embezzlement and abusive detention and his brother Pedro Joaquín of abusive management and detention.

Pedro's only crime was to " 

demand free elections

 ," his brother Carlos tweeted, alluding to the ruling party's control of the electoral system.

The prosecution did not specify when the preliminary hearings would take place.

Along with them, seven other people who worked or collaborated with the FVBCH Foundation were also accused of various crimes.
