The investigation into the death of a 46-year-old man after a brawl in Rennes on Saturday evening was not slow to move forward.

On Tuesday, a man was remanded in custody and a criminal investigation for murder was opened, we learned from the prosecution.

The events took place in an apartment located rue de la Volga, in the Blosne district.

The victim, born in 1975, succumbed to the blows suffered during a "very violent fight" against a background of drug trafficking.

The brawl involved no less than five individuals, said Rennes deputy public prosecutor Sébastien Farges.

It was during this fight that the victim was "very seriously injured in the chest, probably by various blunt objects", some of which were found at the scene.

The suspect denies having been beaten

The man in custody admitted to having taken part in the brawl at the victim's home, accompanied by "two accomplices", but assures "not to have struck", according to the prosecution.

A first man, present at the scene and wounded, had been taken into custody on the evening of the events but he would not be involved in the murder.

However, he will be the subject of a subsequent summons for other acts of violence committed against the suspect placed in pre-trial detention.

The investigation, entrusted to the judicial police, continues for "the identification and arrest of the co-perpetrators", concluded the prosecution.
