French actress Marion Cotillard will receive a career award next month at the San Sebastian film festival in Spain, organizers said on Tuesday.

"One of the most international contemporary French actresses will receive a Donostia award at the 69th edition of the San Sebastián Festival," the statement said.

The award will be presented to him on September 17 during the opening ceremony.

The Donostia prize (Basque name for San Sebastián, a seaside town in the Basque country, in the north of Spain) was awarded for the first time in 1986. In the past, it has rewarded Meryl Streep, Richard Gere and Robert De Niro.

The organizers of the festival justified their choice by the fact that Marion Cotillard "shone intensely in European and American productions, playing dramatic, comic and action roles with equal talent".

The 45-year-old actress became a world star with her portrayal of Edith Piaf in the film "La Môme" (2007), which won her a shower of trophies: Oscar, Golden Globe, Bafta and César.

The Donostia Prize will also be presented this year to an actor, Hollywood star Johnny Depp, for lifetime achievement.

This choice had sparked some controversy, the interpreter of Jack Sparrow in "Pirate of the Caribbean" having been at the center of a recent lawsuit against a British tabloid who accused him of having been a violent husband towards his ex-wife Amber Heard.

The actor lost the lawsuit, which tarnished his reputation.

The San Sebastian International Film Festival, originally created to reward films in the Spanish language, has become a major event in the world of cinema.

Its 69th edition will take place from September 17 to 25.
